History buffs from all over the world flock to the iconic Arizona Memorial, built to honor those who lost their lives aboard the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. It is the most visited destination at the Pearl Harbor World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument, but before embarking on a US Navy operated boat to the memorial, visitors will get the chance to watch real footage of the attack and gain a deeper understanding of the events leading up to what is thought of as the start of U.S. involvement in WWII.
The USS Arizona Memorial itself is an incredibly unique structure, built over the sunken battleship, which remains the final resting place for the 1,177 crewmen who lost their lives on the that fateful day December 7, 1941. A visit lets you see for yourself the “black tears” of the USS Arizona as oil slowly leaks to the surface of the ocean. The Shrine Room includes the names of all those who fell during the attack, allowing visitors to pay their respects.
Continuing on this historical journey, you’ll venture into downtown Honolulu for some often overlooked and under appreciated attractions, such as Iolani Palace, the only palace on American soil or the coral-built Kawaiahao Church. Later drive through Punchbowl National Cemetery where your professional tour guide will explain the historical significance and history of the crater.
After all this history, of course you’ll be hungry! Enjoy an optional lunch at a local hot spot. Doraku Sushi is more than a Japanese restaurant, with chefs preparing delicious dishes utilizing locally caught fresh fish and other produce, this asian fusion restaurant will leave you wanting to come back on your own time for more! Doraku has an inventive culinary style reflecting the cultural diversity of Oahu and the Hawaiian Islands. Tour-goers will get in or outdoor seating at Doraku’s restaurant, and indulge in the unique selection for lunch.
