December 7, 1941, was a dark day in U.S. history, when the country was attacked on Oahu’s Pearl Harbor. It is nearly an impossible task not to visit the memorials found at Pearl Harbor during your vacation to Honolulu. This discovery trip will take you to the Pacific Aviation Museum, the Arizona Memorial and Pearl Harbor Visitors Center.
Discover Aviation Life of the U.S. Military
Ford Island, a 441-acre island, became an airfield for the U.S. in 1918. When the aircrafts were moved to a bigger area on the island of Oahu, the Navy moved in its ships. Today, Ford Island is a National Historic Landmark protected and preserved by the Navy. The Pacific Aviation Museum of Pearl Harbor on Ford Island showcases the artifacts of the Navy and the Pearl Harbor Naval Base, and you will have a chance to visit this museum dedicated to our Pacific fleet, as well as see vintage airplanes and experience life in the cockpit in a flight simulator.
Honor the Fallen Sailors in Pearl Harbor
As you continue exploring America’s history, you will visit the USS Arizona Memorial. On a fateful December day in 1941, the Japanese attacked the ships moored in Pearl Harbor, including two cruisers and eight battleships. The ship, destroyed in the attack, took the lives of 1,177 people and is the final resting place to 1,102 of those lost. In 1962, this memorial was placed above the sunken ship and is another National Historic Landmark that honors the fallen. The 17-acre Pearl Harbor Visitor Center is a must-see while visiting Hawaii.
Other sites include the King Kamehameha Statue, Kawaiahao Church, the State Library, the Mission Houses Museum and Honolulu Hale (City Hall). Experience how history comes to life!
